TUSCALOOSA — The Class 1A/5A girls flag football championship kicked off the Super 7 AHSAA football championships Wednesday afternoon, with the Montgomery Catholic Knights matching up against the Wenonah Dragons.
Catholic’s Jehle Dickson two touchdown passes was not enough as the Knights fell to the Dragons 18-12 in overtime.
Wenonah started the game by intercepting Dickson’s pass, setting up the games first touchdown of the day. After back-to-back punts to begin the first quarter, Haley Ishman intercepted a Wenonah pass to close out the first quarter. Ishman finished with two total interceptions in the contest.
Anna Russo commanded the following drive for the Knights with three straight receptions, placing Catholic in the red zone. On a crucial fourth down, Russo rose up and snagged in a reception for the Knights first score.
Game-changing Plays
Wenonah closed out the the first half by returning a punt the length of the field right before the break to provide a one-score lead. The play set up from a handoff toss during the return, fooling the Knights defenders.
Catholic responded with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Katherine Robertson in the third to knot the game at 12-12 before going into overtime.
Overtime
The Dragons had a chance to end the game in regulation after connecting on a deep pass, putting them at the 2-yard line in the closing seconds. Catholic’s defense would stop them at the goal line, sending the game into overtime.
Catholic received the ball first and was stopped outside the end zone on fourth down. Wenonah took over and scored on fourth-down rushing attempt to claim the state championship. Catholic wrapped up the season winning 10 games and Class 1A/5A State runner-up.
