Female lifeguards from Dewey Beach Patrol won the inaugural Rehoboth Beach Brawl Flag Football Tournament held June 14 at Deauville Beach.
Lifeguard squads from Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, North Bethany, Delaware State Parks and Ocean City, Md., sent women to participate. Before and after the games, the lifeguards were friendly; however, during the games, the competition was fierce – hip checks, battles for balls in the air, diving flag grabs, sand in the face and hair.
There were two fields, which meant four teams could play at once. Teams played two 10-minute halves, with a five-minute break in between. There was a 10-minute break between games.
Dozens of male and noncompeting female lifeguards supported their teammates.
Rehoboth Beach Patrol Capt. Jeff Giles said the event is all in good fun and hopefully it continues to grow.
“Although, I do hope my girls win because I’m going to have to hear about all day tomorrow if they don’t,” said Giles, laughing.
