Winnerz Circle 10-and-under flag football team wins tourney

The local Winnerz Circle 10-and-under flag football team won the championship in its age group at the Flag Football World Championship Tour’s Youth World Championships on Jan. 21-23 in Tampa.

The locals were seeded seventh after day one but went 4-0 on day three, including a 12-7 win in the final. Winnerz Circle was down 7-0 at the half, but Eli Allen and Cooper Jones scored second-half touchdowns to propel the team to the title. 

Tyler Garrison was named the team’s Offensive MVP. Semarias Arneaud was named Defensive MVP.

The other players on the team were Angel Bass-Gutierrez, Aidan Murray, Marcus London, Trace Paffrath, William Hale and quarterback Rayshawn Jeffries. Cordell Arneaud and Dennis Murray were the coaches.

Winnerz Circle brought five age-group teams to the tournament. This was the club’s first flag football tournament after practicing for four weeks, said Winnerz Circle coordinator Sharell Arneaud.

Five Star finalist

The Flagler Palm Coast boys basketball team was the surprise team of the Five Star Conference tournament. The Bulldogs (9-11) defeated Atlantic and Pine Ridge before falling to DeLand in the final.

FPC had won four in a row heading into the DeLand game. They will travel to St. Augustine High on Feb. 1 and meet DeLand again on Feb. 3 before ending the regular season on Feb. 4 at home against Orangewood Christian.

Down to the wire again

The Matanzas boys basketball team lost its fourth game of the season decided by two points, 62-60 in overtime to Tocoi Creek on Jan. 21. It was the Pirates’ final home game of the season. They finish the season with six straight road games.

Matanzas also has a two-point victory, beating Seabreeze 65-63 on Jan. 13.

Gifford, Montgomery combine for 30

The FPC girls basketball team ended a four-game losing streak with a 54-32 win against Crescent City on Jan. 24. the Bulldogs were led by sophomore Brynn Gifford with 17 points and senior Remi Montgomery with 13 points.
