Dr. Phillips’s girls flag football team moved up to No. 3 in this week’s Class 3A Florida High School Athletic Association power rankings. But the Panthers’ hold on that lofty perch did not last long.
Playing without standout junior Asiana Govan, DP suffered was dealt its first defeat, 27-12, by Jones on Wednesday night.
DP coach Anthony Jones said Govan is no longer a member of his team, which slipped to 9-1.
Jones senior Jamiyah Coleman sealed the victory when she intercepted a Panthers pass in the end zone with time running out and carried it all the way back for a pick-six touchdown. She had 3TDs and 2 interceptions in the game.
Sophomore quarterback Deashja “Cocoa” Pryor threw for 2 TDs and used her quickness to scramble for a number of third down conversions for the Tigers, who improved to 8-1 and figure to move up the 1A rankings.
Lake Mary (20-1) bounced back from its Orlando Classic loss to Winter Park with four straight-set wins and is ranked No. 1 in the state.
Freedom (18-3), the Orlando Classic champ, is No. 2.
Winter Park (15-1) was No. 4 heading into a Friday night home match against Lake Nona (11-7).
Lake Mary, Freedom and Winter Park are in three different regions this year and all three can get to the eight-team state tournament, which will be played May 13-14, at Archbishop McCarthy High School in Broward County.

Hagerty (10-0) has climbed to No. 1 in the FHSAA power rankings. The Huskies will host their senior day match on Thursday and are home for district tournament play, April 26 and April 28.
West Orange (12-1), which owes its only loss to the Huskies, is No. 11.
St. Cloud, East River and Lake Minneola captured regional meet championships in boys weightlifting.
The Bulldogs racked up 60 points for a decisive win over Boca Raton Olympic Heights (35) and backyard rival Harmony (33)
The Falcons topped Timber Creek 47 points to 32 in the 3A Region 2 meet held at East River.
Lake Minneola outscored host Leesburg 35-27 for the 2A Region 2 title.
The state championships will be held at Port St. Joe High School in the Panhandle with 3A next Thursday, followed by 2A on Friday and and 1A on Saturday.
Dr. Phillips’ boys and Lake Nona’s girls will take perfect records into the FHSAA water polo state tournament after winning region finals this week.
DP improved to 29-0 with its win over Boone.
The defending state champ Lions ran their record to 24-0 this year and 42-0 over two seasons with their win against Boone.
They will be joined by Winter Park (26-5) on the girls side and Oviedo’s boys team (14-2), which earned the school’s first trip to the water polo state tournament.

We’re two weeks away from Seminole County hosting the FHSAA state tennis tournaments.
Region semifinal matches, hosted by district champions against runners-up from adjacent districts, are Tuesday. Region finals are set for Thursday with winners advancing to the state finals, which will be played April 25-29 at three parks: Sanlando, Red Bug and Sylvan Lake.
Lake Nona’s boys and girls teams each went 17-0 in the regular season and rolled to district tournament victories. Lake Mary’s girls are 12-0.
The Geneva School boys fashioned a 12-0 record that included a 4-3 win against Lake Highland Prep and a 6-1 victory over Seminole. But Trinity Prep edged Geneva 14 points to 13 to win the Class 1A District 5 tournament.
