Vallejo City Council chooses district boundary map … again – Times-Herald

The Vallejo City Council is hoping that the third time is the charm when it comes to choosing a district boundary map.

The California Elections Code requires that every 10 years cities with by-district election systems use new census data to review and, if needed, redraw the district lines to reflect how local populations have changed. This process ensures all districts have nearly equal populations. The redistricting process for the city must be completed by April 17.

On Tuesday night the council approved District Map B as it would have 26 less people deferred (267) than District Map A, which would have 293 people deferred.

In February, after originally choosing what was labeled as the Draft B map after a presentation by Ken Chawkins, the council voted 7-0 to reconsider in a rare move. The council eventually choose the Draft A map instead due to false information and statistics given during the presentation.

Originally the council voted 7-0 for the Draft B map largely because of the belief that it had fewer people disenfranchised, with 26 people. It turns out that was Draft A’s map.

A motion was then made and the council voted 7-0 to use Draft A map instead. But there was misinformation over that as well, so the council made a third attempt to get it right on Tuesday.

Chawkins apologized for the errors on Tuesday night.

.Councilmember Mina Loera-Diaz volunteered to reach out to the 26 people deferred.

“I know this map now like the palm of my hand,” Loera-Diaz said. “Although 26 people is too many, this was the only way this could get done.”
