St. Thomas’ Problem went undefeated to win the adult division title over the weekend in the Touchdowns 4 D Cure flag football tournament on St. Croix.
Problem – comprised mostly of high school players from Ivanna Eudora Kean High School – won its second tournament title this season. The team also won the second annual Dana Richardson Tournament in early November on St. Thomas.
The other division winners in this weekend’s tournament, held at the Educational Complex High School field were Lew Muckle Elementary School in the 6-11 division, XceQters in the 12-14 division and Little Rebels in the 15-18 division.
Zavier Powell, a junior at Ivanna Eudora Kean High, was named the adult division’s most valuable player after scoring two touchdowns and an extra point in Problem’s first two games.
To advance to the championship game, Problem opened with a 7-6 victory over Talibans, with Powell scoring and Julian Maduro hitting Chrislord Bernard on the extra-point pass for the winning point.
Problem then shut out the Titans 8-0 in the semifinal, with Powell scoring on both a 30-yard slant pass TD and a two-point conversion pass from Maduro.
In the championship game against the Knightz, Problem’s defense carried the day, coming up with seven interceptions – two returned for touchdowns – and a safety.
Guyma Phebe had Problem’s only offensive touchdown, and had one of the two “pick 6’s.” Bernard also returned an interception for a touchdown.
Tristan Rolle had three interceptions for Problem, with Shaquille Petersen and Israel Poleon also coming up with picks.
