Spruce Creek survived another treacherous trip to Orange County for the opening round of the FHSAA’s flag football playoffs.
Taylor Snowden tossed two touchdowns, Katie Herb caught a score and snagged two interceptions and the Hawks held on for a 13-6 victory Tuesday at Winter Park in Region 1-2A quarterfinal action.
The Hawks (13-2) will seek revenge Thursday when they travel to Fleming Island. The Golden Eagles blanked Spruce Creek 25-0 last week for the District 3-2A championship.
Jayda Centeno put Creek on the board in the first quarter with a 34-yard TD reception from Snowden. Herb doubled the lead with a 12-yard catch in the third, followed by a PAT conversion from Snowden to Summerlyn Chastain.
Winter Park pulled within a score in the fourth on a 52-yard touchdown run.
Spruce Creek is the only team from the Volusia-Flagler-St. Johns area still alive after Round 1.
Top-seeded Mainland (12-5) lost 19-12 at home to Suncoast, snapping an eight-game winning streak, in a Region 3-1A quarterfinal.
Seabreeze (11-7) suffered overtime heartbreak as Courtney Cromer found Julia Thurlow for a game-winning 4-yard TD pass as Jensen Beach prevailed, 6-0.
