FRANKLIN — Ravenwood High School multiport star Sarah Kate Rath and Independence baseball’s Drew Blalock were selected as the Gateway Tire Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 27.
The pair were chosen as part of the athletes of the week awards sponsored by Garth Bouldin of Gateway Tire & Service Center in Franklin. Each week, one male and one female athlete from Williamson County are selected and featured in the Williamson Herald throughout the school year.
In addition, both athletes will be recognized Wednesday at 6 p.m. as part of a live broadcast on WAKM and online from Tony’s Eat and Drink in Franklin during the live “WillCo Sports Power Hour” broadcast.
Sarah Kate Rath
Rath scored five total touchdowns as the Girls Flag Football League debuted Sunday. The Raptors senior, who is headed to Cincinnati in the fall to play soccer, ran in three touchdowns, caught another and threw for one more as Ravenwood opened 2-0 with a 48-0 win over Nolensville and a 40-6 victory over Brentwood.
“Sarah Kate did an excellent job of controlling the game as our QB,” Ravenwood coach Will Hester said. “Her leadership was evident, exactly what you would expect from a Division I athlete.
“I can’t wait to see how she grows over the course of the season.”
Ravenwood hosts Sunday with games against Independence and Franklin during the second weekend of the inaugural season.
Drew Blalock
Blalock helped lead the Eagles baseball team to a 4-1 mark last week. He batted 10-for-18 with four homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and seven runs scored. He also posted a save, throwing three innings and notching seven strikeouts with two hits and no earned with two walks in a 14-4 win over Clarksville.
“He had a great week for us,” Indy coach Mike McLaury said. “He has such great power, and when he hits, it just sounds different than with others.
“And when he starts to swing a hot bat for us, it makes all those around him see better pitches. He’s been finding his groove.”
The Eagles posted an 18-0 win over Marshall County, 7-1 win against Blackman as well as an 8-5 victory over Rockvale. They suffered an 8-5 setback against Rossview on Thursday.
Indy defeated Summit 8-4 Tuesday.
