The Teaneck-Hackensack football rivalry can now add a girls division. So can Lakeland-West Milford.
The only thing left to do is start a North Jersey flag football All-Star Game.
For the fourth straight year, the New York Jets announced a partnership to sponsor girls flag football as a club sport in North Jersey. In 2024, the sport will operate as a ‘pilot program’ under the guidance of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. This means the rules in New Jersey will be codified and the sport will be monitored closely with the possibility of it becoming fully sanctioned by 2026.
As a club sport, girls who play flag football still have the ability to compete in an NJSIAA-sanctioned sport like softball, lacrosse or track in the spring.
With the Jets support, the sport has grown each year in North Jersey. Last year, there were 52 North Jersey schools with a team. The teams are broken down into their corresponding conferences for boys teams, with the Super Football Conference growing from 31 teams to 38.
For the first time, there are schools without a boys football program that will compete under the SFC banner in flag football. St. Benedict’s Prep, Beloved Charter and College Achieve Paterson will field flag football teams in 2024.
Other newcomers include Hackensack, DePaul, Orange and Lakeland. The Spartans will be coached by Rasheed Darrisaw and RJ Crusco, assistant coaches on the varsity football staff.
“We are extremely excited about the upcoming girls flag football season,” Hackensack athletic director Scooter Whiting said Wednesday morning. “The female student-athletes and the student body are looking forward to an exciting brand of football under the lights at Tom Della Torre Field. We are thrilled to participate in this groundbreaking moment to expand athletic opportunities for our female student-athletes.”
North Plainfield and Summit are the new entries in the Big Central Conference, growing that league to 17 teams.
The North Jersey Interscholastic Conference had 11 programs last year. The defending champions, Immaculate Conception, will not return because the school closed.
Teams compete in a regular season with the division leaders advancing to the playoffs.
The Jets said, in a release, that nearly 200 high schools and more than 3,000 girls will play girls flag football across New Jersey, New York and Long Island. New York and Long Island have formally recognized the sport.
This year, members of more than 50 teams will be invited to participate in Girls High School Flag Football Media Day at MetLife Stadium on Feb. 22. The 2024 New Jersey State Championship will be held at the Jets Training Center in Florham Park for the third straight year.
Passaic Tech won the first New Jersey flag football title at MetLife Stadium in 2021, defeating Irvington in the final. In 2022, Irvington beat Hawthorne for the state title. Last year, Ridgewood defeated Hillside 47-6 in a game broadcast on NorthJersey.com.
Members of the Ridgewood team were invited to the Pro Bowl in Orlando last weekend to watch the flag football championship played by NFL players.
On Tuesday, Wayne Valley announced a pre-season flag football tournament on Sunday, March 24 called the Valley Jamboree, with 12 teams competing starting at 10 a.m.
