What’s better than watching some of Montgomery’s football greats play a flag football game against police officers? Jarvis Provitt thinks there’s nothing better.
Provitt, along with his “HateLess Foundation,” are hosting a nine-man flag football tournament Saturday at Cramton Bowl to encourage “a day without violence.”
“We wanted to partner with the police department to encourage contact outside of their jobs,” Provitt said. “The main goal is to use football as a tool to get the young people there to get them out and develop relationships with police in a new way.”
Montgomery police Sgt. Jarrett Williams said the chance to participate in the tournament was an opportunity to further engage with the community in a positive way.
“Community engagement allows MPD to build positive relationships with the community and help to promote nonviolence,” Williams said. “These endeavors allow MPD officers to show the community a more personal side and see the investment MPD makes in the community.”
Provitt, who was a standout athlete and two-time All-Metro football player at St. Jude, will be out on the field with other alumni. G.W. Carver, Robert E. Lee, Jeff Davis, Wetumpka and Sidney Lanier alumni will also field teams for the double-elimination tournament. Firefighters with the Montgomery Fire Rescue are also expected to field a team for a total of eight.
Carver alumni Antonio Pitts and Jeremy Johnson as well as Lee graduate Brandon Slater are all planning to participate, Provitt said. Pitts went on to play football at Miles College, Johnson continued the sport at Auburn and Slater walked-on at Alabama State University.
General admission will be $5 at the gate, but anyone who brings a canned good can get in for $2. All canned goods collected will be used to stock the pantry at the “Hateless Foundation” to help feed the homeless or anyone who needs it, Provitt said.
The first game kicks off at 8 a.m. and will continue in about 30-minute increments until there is only one team standing.
“God gave us this vision,” Provitt said. “He’s working it out and the city needs a day like this to encourage community.”
