Football High Live: Updates from Thursday’s 1A, 3A, 5A state title games

Time for Day 2 of the 2022 Super 7 from Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The Class 1A, 3A and 5A champs will be crowned on what looks like a beautiful day at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Play starts at 11 a.m. with the 3A title game between perennial champ Piedmont and newcomer St. James.

RELATED: Breaking down the 5A title game

Check back frequently today for updates and highlights from each game.

NOW PLAYING: Class 3A: St. James (12-2) vs. Piedmont (12-2)

1:38 PM, High 5: KJ Jackson is putting on an absolute show. Jackson’s 5th TD pass OF THE HALF goes for 53 yards to Ethan Beard. Play is under review.

1:33 PM, On the ball: AL.com’s Nick Alvarez called KJ Jackson the most underrated recruit in the state in an AL.com story earlier this year. He was right. Jackson is 9-of-14 for 298 yards and 4 TDs so far today. Here’s the link to his analysis.

1:27 PM, That was quick: KJ Jackson with his 4th TD of the half. This one goes 93 yards to Ethan Beard after the Trojans had muffed the kickoff. The PAT is no good, leaving the St. James’ lead at 37-28 with 10:53 left. Jackson is 9-of-14 for 298 yards, including 5-of-6 in the second half. Jackson, a 3-star recruit, is ranked as the No. 23 junior in the state. It looks like to me he should be higher.

1:23 PM, Make it 4: Jack Hayes scores from 5 yards out on the first play of the final quarter. This should be a good finish. Hayes also scores on the 2 point conversion. Piedmont cut the deficit to 31-28 with 11:55 left in the game.

1:19 PM, End 3: St. James 31, Piedmont 20. Bulldogs will have a third-and-goal at the St. James 5 when action continues. I’m thinking Jack Hayes will probably carry.

1:08 PM, Hot hand: St. James capitalizes again. KJ Jackson has 3 TD passes — all this half. This one goes 57 yards to Clint Houser. The Trojans now lead Piedmont 31-20 with 4:33 left in the third. Jackson is 8-of-3 for 205 yards. The Bulldog fumble on the opening kickoff of the half looming very large right now.

1:06 PM, Momentum change: Trojans force another 3-and-out from Piedmont. They have the ball again at their 40, now leading 24-20 in the 3A title game.

1:02 PM, Lead change: KJ Jackson hits Ziggy Holloway on a 48-yard TD pass. The Trojans have their first lead of the game, 24-20 with 6:19 left in the third. Jackson has completed 7-of-11 passes for 148 yards and 2 scores. He was intercepted once in the first half. Got a game.

12:58 PM, Good hold: The St. James defense makes a stop on Piedmont and forces a punt. Trojans have the ball back at their 34 with 7:38 left in the third quarter. Piedmont leads 20-17.

12:49 PM, Just like that: KJ Jackson hits a wide open Clint Houser with a 21-yard TD pass. St. James cuts the Piedmont lead to 20-17 with less than a minute gone in the second half. Trojans capitalize on the Piedmont fumble. Now can they stop Jack Hayes.

12:48 PM, Turnover: Piedmont fumbles the opening kickoff of the second half and St. James covers it. Trojans in business at the Piedmont 21.

12:30 PM, Halftime stats: Piedmont ran 35 plays for 224 total yards. St. James ran 22 plays for 140 yards. Jack Hayes already has 141 yards rushing and 3 TDs on 21 carries. He is 4-of-10 passing for 71 yards. St. James’ KJ Jackson is 4-of-8 for 68 yards. Cosner Harrison has 71 yards and the Trojans’ only TD on the ground.

12:22 PM, Halftime: Piedmont 20, St. James 10.

12:20 PM, Same old story: Jack Hayes scores on a 1-yard run up the middle, his third TD of the game, with 3 seconds left in the half. Bulldogs lead 20-10.

12:03 PM, Nice response: St. James moves 55 yards in 7 plays. Cosner Harrison scores on a 13-yard run up the middle. The PAT is good. Trojans cut the Piedmont lead to 13-10 with 2:39 left in the half. Got a good one brewing in Game 1 of the day.

11:54 AM, Touchdown: Jack Hayes scores on a 4-yard run with 6:00 left in the half. The fourth-down run caps a 13 play, 80-yard drive by the Bulldogs. The PAT is no good. Piedmont leads 13-3. Hayes ups his AHSAA record of TDs accounted for to 221 with his two today.

11:49 AM, Big conversion: Piedmont converts a fourth-and-15 on a 22-yard pass to Thomas Propst. Bulldogs threatening again inside the St. James 10.

11:35 AM, End 1: Piedmont 7, St. James 3. Pretty tight game statistically. Piedmont has run 12 plays for 90 yards. St. James 14 for 86. Jack Hayes has 55 yards rushing and a TD and 37 yards passing.

11:32 AM, On the board: KJ Jackson is caught for a 2-yard loss on third down. Jake Huff kicks a 40-yard field goal to get St. James on the scoreboard. The Piedmont lead is 7-3 with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

11:29 AM, Driving: St. James on the move now with KJ Jackson in rhythm. Trojans have a third-and-1 at the Piedmont 20 with 1:23 left in the first quarter. They trail 7-0.

11:20 AM, Picked off: Jake Austin intercepts KJ Jackson’s pass at the Piedmont 46. Bulldogs in business again, already leading 7-0. However, the Bulldogs can’t convert on fourth-and-6 and turn it back to St. James. Trojans dodged a bullet there.

11:17 AM, Touchdown Bulldogs: Jack Hayes scores on a 3-yard run, capping a 6-play, 68-yard drive following a defensive stop. Bulldogs lead 7-0 with 6:47 left in the first quarter.

11:12 AM, Turning it over on downs: St. James KJ Jackson hits Ethan Beard for a 37-yard gain on the first play of the game, but the Trojans bog down and fail to convert on fourth-and-8. Piedmont takes over at its 32.

11:07 AM, Here we go: St. James will receive to start the 3A title game. Trojans averaged 35.5 points a game this year. Piedmont averaged 38.1. Could it be a shootout?

10:56 AM, Championship history: Piedmont is looking for its second straight Class 3A state title and its sixth state title since 2009. St. James is in the title game for the first time. Rosters being introduced now as we close in on kicking off Day 2.

10:43 AM, Back Home: UMS-Wright coach Terry Curtis, an Auburn graduate, back on the Plains today. Curtis is now the AHSAA’s all-time winningest coach with 348 victories. He passed longtime Vestavia Hills coach Buddy Anderson this year. His team lost to Charles Henderson in the Class 5A quarterfinals.

10:35 AM, On the other side: St. James’ K.J. Jackson is one of the top junior recruits in the state. He has passed for 2,484 yards and 37 TDs with just 6 INTs. Should be a good QB battle today.

10:21 AM, Jack of all trades: Piedmont QB Jack Hayes enters today’s first game already holding multiple AHSAA records. Hayes is the career leader in passing yards (10,944), passing touchdowns (159), career offense (14,809) and TDs accounted for (219 — 154 passing, 58 rushing).

9:42 AM, First two champs: Auburn won the second girls flag football championship to open the Super 7 on Wednesday, but Thompson defeated the Tigers 49-24 later in the night to win the Class 7A state title. It was the fourth straight state title win for Mark Freeman’s Warriors.
