COVID-19 Ends NWHL Season, Postpones NLL Until Fall

The coronavirus shook up the sports schedule on Wednesday, with both the National Women’s Hockey League and National Lacrosse League canceling their seasons due to the pandemic. The NLL had hoped to start its spring season in April, but it now plans to play in the fall instead.

“The logistical challenges, including the recently announced tighter travel and quarantine restrictions across the Canadian border have required us to pivot. We have decided to focus on playing a full season in our markets, starting in the fall of this year,” NLL commissioner Nick Sakiewicz said in a statement.

The NWHL, which was in the midst of its playoffs after starting play on Jan. 23, canceled the remainder of its season due to new positive coronavirus tests among its teams. The entire season was being played without fans at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y. One of the six NWHL clubs, the Metropolitan Riveters, had already ended its season last week due to positive tests on the club.

In other sports stoppage news, the NHL’s Buffalo Sabers paused its season on Tuesday until at least Feb. 8. The New Jersey Devils also won’t play until at least Feb. 6 due to absences related to COVID-19. The NBA, which has postponed more than 20 games this season due to the virus, will begin requiring players to wear KN95 or KF94 masks on the bench during games, according to ESPN.
