The new wave of COVID-19 in the community spurred by the omicron variant has caused various events to be canceled and postponed with one of charity events scheduled for this weekend officially pushed back Tuesday.
The “Smiles From Heaven’s 1st Annual Flag Football Tournament,” which was originally scheduled for this Saturday, has been postponed to another day, and it is still not known when it will be held as health officials are hesitant to see these events go on right now. The decision to postpone the event was made by the president of the Bella Strong organization.
“We regret to inform everyone that our SFH Flag Football Tournament at Father McNaboe Park on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2022, has been postponed,” said Ray Sanchez, co-founder and president of the Bella Strong organization. “We made this difficult decision to postpone after the worry of spread of COVID by the Laredo Health Authority.”
Although no new date has been decided on when the event will be held, Sanchez did put on social media they are considering new dates and they will provide an update of when the event will be held once conditions are better.
“We will keep everyone posted on when the event is going to take place,” Sanchez said. “Thank you for your interest in participating in this event, and we look forward to working together to help make a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer.”
The proceeds collected from the postponed event were going to be used for the benefit of “kids with cancer,” according to the organization’s social media page. The event was slated to occur at Father McNaboe Park located in the Mines Road area.
The tournament was slated to be composed of a 12-team open flag football competition with a registration fee for each team at a flat rate of $275. Sanchez did post on social media they will be providing refunds to all who paid for their tickets, and they can receive their refund by contacting them through social media or via phone.
More information about the new date of the tournament or any other information concerning the Bella Strong organization and all of their events throughout the year can be found by calling Sanchez at 956-337-8967.
