Baseball, golf competitions kick off AHSAA All-Star Week in Montgomery

Competition for rising seniors begins in Montgomery on Monday for the annual Alabama High School Athletic Association’s All-Star Week with boys and girls golf and a baseball doubleheader as part of the AHSAA’s annual Summer Conference.

All-Star Week also features a doubleheader in softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, boys and girls cross country and volleyball. Tickets are $5 per event.

The baseball stars for the South squad include Class 2A state champion shortstop Caden Collier of Ariton and pitcher/infielder 5A champ Drey Barrett of Holtville. The North team includes 6A state champ pitcher/shortstop Carter Johnson of Oxford and catcher John Paul Head of 7A champion Vestavia Hills.

Baseball’s doubleheader at the home of the Double A Montgomery Biscuits starts at 4 p.m. Monday.

Class 3A state tournament medalist Eli Edge of champion Westbrook Christian heads the North All-Stars as golf starts for both boys and girls at 9 a.m. Monday at Arrowhead Country Club. Edge shot 75-76–151 for the Warriors.

The AHSAA Summer Conference, beginning Tuesday at the Montgomery Renaissance Hotel and Conference Center, is expected to attract more than 4,000 coaches, administrators, contest officials and all-star athletes. The conference concludes on Friday with the mandatory Principals and Athletic Directors meeting.

Thursday’s highlight will be the AHSAA/AHSADCA Championship Coaches Awards Banquet, set for 6 p.m. The banquet concludes with the AHSAA “Making a Difference Award” ceremony honoring winners from the seven school classifications. This year’s winners are Keith High School volleyball and basketball coach Towanna Flennory (1A); Red Bay assistant principal Jacqueline Parsons (2A); St. James athletic director and girls basketball coach Katie Barton (3A); Brooks assistant principal and volleyball coach Ryan Roberson (4A); Leeds assistant football coach Curtis Coleman (5A); Central-Tuscaloosa administrator and girls flag football coach Dennis Conner (6A); and Opelika assistant football coach Adam Massey (7A).

Competitions will be live-streamed over the NFHS Network with Central-Phenix City High School’s NFHS Network School Broadcast Program producing the streams. The AHSAA TV Network (WOTM-TV) will also broadcast most of the all-star events either live or tape-delayed each day.
