Williamson County girls flag football league preps for inaugural season | Preps

For the first time in Tennessee, Williamson County high schools will take part in a pilot program for a girls’ flag football league sponsored by the Tennessee Titans in partnership with the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.

Beginning March 27, each of the nine teams will play two opposing teams back-to-back on Sunday afternoons over a four-week season, culminating in a postseason tournament at Nissan Stadium in May.

Games will be played in a 7-on-7 format and will rotate sites among the seven schools that have artificial turf, which excludes Independence and Summit.

Teams are guaranteed a second season next year, and by Year 3, girls flag football will be added to the list of TSSAA sanctioned spring sports. Only five other states — Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Georgia and Nevada — sponsor girls flag football.

“I heard about it from the other states, and I was a little jealous of them,” Brentwood senior Kendall Overgaard said. “It is really fun to take a step out there and try something else.”

Nolensville, Franklin and Fairview will be the host sites for the first week of the season.

Ravenwood opens the year against Nolensville at 2 p.m. before the first flag football installment of the Battle of the Woods against crosstown rival Brentwood at 3 p.m. The Bruins then wrap up the day against Nolensville at 4 p.m. All games will be played at Nolensville High School.

“I am always excited to play Brentwood,” RHS senior Kennedy Riggs said. “It brings out the competitiveness out of us so much more just because we want to win so badly.”

“It is exciting,” RHS senior Macy Fowler said. “They [Brentwood and Nolensville] are two of our biggest competitors, so we hopefully get a lot of people out there to watch and grow the sport more.”

“The Ravenwood and Brentwood rivalry is so interesting for us because our kids grow up going to the same churches, playing little league with each other, and then they split when they get to middle school and sometimes high school,” Brentwood coach Gabe Evans said. “We are excited that that is our first opportunity.”

Centennial starts its season with a Battle of Franklin rivalry against the Franklin Admirals at 2 p.m. before finishing its two-game slate against Page at 3 p.m. Franklin and Page then close out the final game of the day at 4 p.m. All games will be played at Franklin High School.

“Our girls have been really eager to learn and find us during school and ask some questions,” Centennial coach Matt Kriesky said. “It has been really neat seeing these girls’ interest from the first practice and wanting to practice more.

“It will be neat to start off with the Battle of Franklin. Coach [Donnie] Webb has been sending me text messages to get ready, drawing up formations and talking trash already.”

“Back when I was still the football coach at Franklin, the Titans wanted head coaches to be a part of this,” Franklin coach Donnie Webb said. “Don’t come out here saying we are powder puff, because we are playing flag football.”

Independence opens its season against Fairview at 2 p.m. before facing rival Summit at 3 p.m. Summit then pivots to playing Fairview at 4 p.m. All games will be played at Fairview High School.

“The feelings are mutual on playing Independence,” Summit’s McKinley Johnson said. “Indy/Summit is one of the best weeks in any sport. They are the No. 1 team I am excited to play.”

“The girls are giving my guys a hard time telling me they will win a state championship before [the boys] do,” Fairview coach Chris Hughes said. “I love the game of football, and I would coach junior pro if they asked me to.”
