It was a sub-optimal first half for Kansas City Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend, which contributed to his team falling down 21-6 at halftime of Super Bowl LV.
Townsend initially dropped the snap on a second quarter punt, but was able to recover it and send the ball booming for 56 yards. However, after a holding penalty, Townsend was forced to punt again, and hit the ball off the right side of his foot for just 29 yards. This set Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers up inside the Chiefs 40, which eventually led to them taking a 14-6 led.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, frustrated by Townsend’s first-half performance, attempted to tag him in a tweet criticizing him:
Unfortunately for Smith, the person he tagged wasn’t the punter for the Chiefs, but just a random Twitter user who happened to share the same last name:
Some would argue that the Chiefs and Buccaneers played something like flag football in the first half, but that’s another conversation for another time.
