After recently gaining recognition from the NYSPHSAA as a championship sport and more schools joining the movement, there was additional momentum Wednesday as 15 of the 16 teams from Section 1 opened the 2023 season at Somers High School with a jamboree attended by several Giants players.
The sport was launched with 51 teams in six sections around the state last season as a pilot program. With financial and logistical support from the Giants, Jets and Bills and Nike, 140 teams are expected to competed this spring across New York.
Section 1 has doubled participation. There will be state playoffs for girls flag football in 2024. Xavier McKinney, Matt Peart, Sterling Shepard, Matt Breida and Elerson Smith were on hand for the Giants providing instruction.
