Ramapo Girls Flag Football To Open 2023 Season With New Head Coach

WYCKOFF, NJ — A former football player and running backs coach at William Paterson University will coach Ramapo girls flag football for the spring 2023 season.

Sean Maldonato, also a health and physical education teacher at Ramapo High School, was announced as the next head coach of the new girls flag football team.

“It is with great pleasure that we announce the hiring,” the school said in a statement. “Coach Maldonato has a passion for developing students cognitively and physically. He is dedicated to creating a positive environment for students to flourish, learn and work together.”

Maldonato played four years (2017-2021) of Division 3 football at William Paterson University, three of which he was a starter on defense and two of which he was team captain, and he helped coach the Pioneers in spring 2022. He also served on staff for Ramapo High School freshman football in fall 2022, helping lead the team to an 8-2 record.

“I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to lead the girls flag football team,” Maldonato said. “I am grateful to be a part of the Ramapo community and will work hard to continue its tradition of excellence, high character, and integrity.”

Maldonato also played football at Lakeland Regional High School, where he was a two-year starter and an all-conference honoree.

He replaces former Ramapo coach Eileen Shemon, also a former P.E. teacher who resigned, effective Aug. 2022. Shemon is now a health/P.E. teacher at Bernardsville Middle School, according to her Facebook.

Ramapo High School and Indian Hills High Schools were two of eight schools that agreed to participate in the inaugural season of a pilot girls flag football league created in spring 2021, an announcement said at the time. The league was created by the New York Jets and Nike with the “long-term goal” of adoption as an official varsity championship sport in New Jersey and New York.

In its third year, the league has expanded to more than 100 teams in both states, and will end with state championship games on June 10 at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park. The 2023 season is expected to start in the spring.

“The Jets (and) Nike believe girls should have the opportunity to play football and experience everything the greatest game in the world has to offer,” the Jets said on its website. “The (league) provides character building, perseverance, teamwork and dedication skills that will empower these girls throughout every aspect of their lives.”
