After President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, the news that American slaves were free to travel across the United States to Texas took two and a half years. June 16th. After President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, the news that American slaves were free to travel across the United States to Texas took two and a half years.

The day the order was read, June 19, 1865, is known as Juneteenth.

It is growing as a day to commemorate and celebrate the end of American slavery.

In Pittsburgh, celebrations include flag football tournaments and many other activities at Mellon Park.
