Moose Jaw Youth Flag Football president Vincent stepping aside after decade at helm

Longtime league president oversaw impressive growth of sport in city since inception in 2012

When the Moose Jaw Youth Flag Football League first kicked off in the spring of 2012, it offered young players something that the city hadn’t seen on a large scale in quite some time — a non-contact football league designed with all-around player skill development in mind.

That first season saw a total of 98 youngsters try out the new game, and little did league president Wendy Vincent know at the time, but they would soon have a monster of sport on their hands.

Not only did players from the league pick up on the intricacies of passing, catching and evading pursuit, they did so in one of the most fun environments imaginable. Those players would take the field in the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Minor Football and Moose Jaw High School Football Leagues in the fall and show off their new skills and at the same time let their friends know exactly how they’d improved so much.

It wasn’t long after that the MJYFL saw registration numbers topping out in the 450 range, making it one of the biggest sports in the Friendly City.

And Vincent was there through it all, providing a guiding hand as the league president since the league’s inception, including their affiliation with the Nike NFL Flag League in recent years.

The MJYFL championship tournament — featuring gold medal and consolation games across six age divisions and including more than 250 players — took place on Saturday at MacDonald Athletic Field and will mark the final event for Vincent at the league’s helm.

“It’s been an amazing program,” Vincent said prior to the 14/15 division gold medal game in cool and breezy conditions Saturday afternoon. “To see where we started with around 98 players and how much it’s grown over the years, it’s been a lot of fun to be a part of. And this year we’re at over 250, which isn’t too bad coming back after COVID and having a full season again.”

It certainly doesn’t hurt that the sport itself is by all accounts an absolute blast to play — games feature tons of quick-strike offence and with limited contact can feature all sorts of dynamic action for both boys and girls..

“It’s quick, everyone gets to play and it’s been an absolute joy to watch these kids from the six-and-seven age division grow,” Vincent said. “You watch them ‘get it’, then watch them playing and understand more and more as it gets more competitive as they get older… I’ve had a lot of people come to me and say it’s their favourite sport, they love it, and it’s been so great to be around kids having that kind of fun.”

It also isn’t a fluke that Moose Jaw high school teams in the 5A Rural South Football League have seen a ton of players with high-level pass-catching and evasion skills take the gridiron over the last decade. Turns out, being able haul in a pass in traffic and avoid opposition trying to take your flag translates well into the tackle version of the sport.

“I think it’s critical,” Vincent said when asked about the skill development seen in flag football. “There normally isn’t any spring tackle football in Moose Jaw, and before the pandemic we had a spring league that had high school students playing and it was literally like spring training. My boys all did it, C.J. and Ryan and now Tommy, whose out here reffing today.

So it’s a great foundation for people who are playing tackle football and it really helps with a lot of aspects of the sport.”

The positive news is that even though Vincent won’t be leading the ship anymore, it’s being left in good and capable hands — longtime board members Mac and Nicole Ansell along with Colin and Angie Belsher plan to say on and make sure things continue to run smoothly.

“They’ve been on the executive with me the last seven or eight years, so I know it’s all going to be in excellent hands,” Vincent said. “Everybody will be well-taken care of… It’s an awesome sport, I loved it, and it’s great to see it still going and hopefully getting even bigger and better.”
