Liberty Lions girls flag football head coach Matt Malzahn was one of two coaches named the Bay Valley Athletic League Fall Coach of the Year for female sports by BVAL commissioner Steve Ahonen on Thursday.
Malzahn led Liberty’s first-ever girls flag football team to the first-ever BVAL girls flag football league title and an 8-3 overall record (8-2 in the BVAL) in the sports first season as a BVAL varsity sport. Liberty lost to top-seeded California High School in double overtime in the first NCS girls flag football tournament at Alhambra High School in Martinez last week.
The Lions bounced back from a debut 25-6 loss at Heritage in early September, their worst loss of the season, to win eight of their remaining nine games highlighted a 52-6 revenge win against the Patriots in the regular season finale.
