Lehigh Valley Flashback Feb. 19: In 1976, Lehigh Valley stars Mike Guman and Matt Millen sign with Penn State

1971: Pat Sewards and Allen make Tamaqua’s final East Penn League boys basketball game a nightmare by setting league scoring records in a 139-72 win at the Little Palestra. Sewards, who left the game with 3:35 left in the third quarter, scores 62 points to break the record of 59 set by Liberty’s Don Rodenbach in 1962, also against Tamaqua, and shattered Tim Schmeidel’s Allen mark of 49. The Canaries shatter Liberty’s 1955 team mark of 124 points and the team mark of 115 in a 1961 game against Southern Lehigh, and also break the EPL record for points in a half (twice, with 67 in the first and 72 in the second) and in a quarter (41 in the third). The loss was the 43rd straight for Tamaqua, which joins the North Schuylkill League the following season.
