The first season of girls flag football as an official CIF sport has come to a close and although the Southern Section won’t be holding any championships this year, a few top players from the area have been recognized.
Westlake’s Grace Roskowick was named the Marmonte League MVP and Ava Bower and Elena Johnson were each Marmonte League first team honorees. Kalia Bell and Melanie Servé was named to the second team and Brandon Alexander was named the league’s coach of the year.
“What an amazing ride?!?!!! I’m honored,” Alexander said in a comment on the Westlake flag football Instagram account.
Westlake went 16-3 overall in its inaugural season, which included a tournament win at the Coastal Clash tournament at Hueneme High School.
Livia Iviea and Jessie Giacomazzi from Agoura (6-6) were named first team and the Chargers’ Claire Heisinger was named second team.
Newbury Park quarterback Greta Heath and receiver/safety Maddie Neier were first team selections and receivers/safeties Brooklyn Batty and Lily Johnson were second team picks.
The Panthers (14-12) also won their bracket at the Coastal Clash Tournament and reached the quarterfinals of the Ventura County Championship tournament, where they fell 34-22 to Oxnard (16-7).
Royal (11-7) shut out Oxnard for the Ventura County title and had Leah Orsini and Morgan Arrasmith honored on the All-Ventura County team, which was decided by tournament organizers.
“The inaugural 2023 Girls Flag Football Season has come to a close with the Ventura County Flag Football Championships,” Royal flag football said in an Instagram post. “The champions have been crowned…your girls did it.”
Newbury Park’s Neier and Heath, Agoura’s Iviea and Giacomazzi as well as Oak Park’s Emaline Alikian and Aiyana Gonzalez were part of the All-Ventura County Team.
