This fall, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will pilot girls’ flag football as a varsity sport.
The sport will be at all 25 high schools. On Monday, MCM went to John F. Kennedy High School in Wheaton-Glenmont for a girls’ flag football clinic, hosted by MCPS and the Baltimore Ravens.
The school system is doing the pilot in partnership with the Ravens and Under Armour.
“We are just getting started with girls’ flag in MCPS, this sport is just going to take off,” said MCPS Systemwide Athletics Director Dr. Jeff Sullivan. “And it’s not just in Montgomery County Public Schools, we’re also working with our rec department and our community to really establish a strong pipeline for girls’ flag in Montgomery County.”
The partnership provides some funding, and grant funding will also cover expenses. The Ravens made a donation to cover things like equipment and Under Armour will provide uniforms for each school.
Frederick County Public Schools piloted girls’ flag football last year, according to MCPS.
Also, flag football was added as an Olympic sport to the 2028 Summer Olympics.
