There are four employees hospitalized of nearly 20 who were not feeling well or fell ill after a freon leak inside the Costco on Route 35 in Hazlet Township Thursday morning, Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden confirms to Townsquare Media News.
The Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management got the call which led to the Monmouth County EMS Task Force responding to the scene accompanied by 15-20 ambulances from the Bayshore area and other parts of Monmouth County.
In addition, Sheriff Golden the Monmouth County Hazmat Team responded to the scene.
The Costco store was immediately evacuated on Thursday morning.
Sheriff Golden said the four people brought to Bayshore Medical Center are stable with non-life threatening conditions that include nausea and vomiting.
A couple of the individuals were also having some difficulty breathing.
There are currently refrigerator repair technicians on the scene at Costco looking into the leak.
Hazlet Township Police, Fire and First Aid Squad were also among those to respond Thursday morning.
“We thank all of our public safety partners for their quick response to this situation and wish all staff that was affected a quick recovery,” Hazlet Police said in a statement.
Hazlet Police said Thursday morning that the Costco was closed until further notice.
