The Fathers & Flags 7-on-7 Flag Football Tournament returns to Akron on June 19 after a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The tournament, which will feature six adult teams and four youth teams, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 19 at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
All participants will also receive a free health screening in conjunction with AxessPointe Community Health Centers.
The Fallen Fathers Foundation, Akron Bengals Youth Football, Guys & Gals Community Partnership and The D.A.L.E Program (founded by STVM athletic director Willie McGee) are also all partnering to sponsor the event.
The registration deadline for teams is Friday, June 11, and there is a $50 registration fee per team.
There will be a $5 admission fee for spectators, while those 17 and under can get in for free. Free food is also available while supplies last.
“It’s very exciting,” McGee said of the Juneteenth event. “It kind of speaks to us getting back to some normalcy, getting through the pandemic and being healthy. I think AxessPointe getting our participants checked is vital to what we are trying to do.
“Getting out and promoting a healthy lifestyle, getting out and staying active, really just bringing some camaraderie and some fellowship in the community. This will be for all of us, our first event held after the pandemic, so just want to make sure we are bringing the community together, doing some positive things in the community and celebrating fathers and their kids.”
