With the Fourth of July holiday behind us and the mandated Georgia High School Association dead week having come and gone, fall sports are just out on the horizon.
A total of six GHSA fall sports will be kicking off soon.
Per the official GHSA calendar for the 2021-22 school year, football, cheerleading, fastpitch softball, volleyball and cross country can begin official practices on Monday, Aug. 2. Girls Flag football kicks off a little later in the year; they start practice on Sept. 20.
Fastpitch softball opens their season first; they are allowed official games to start on Thursday, Aug. 5, while volleyball and cross-country start the following Monday, Aug. 9.
Under first-year head coach Carleigh Baker, the Northgate Lady Vikings softball team will travel to Pike County on Friday, Aug. 6, in one of the first games of the school year in the county.
Football opens its regular season schedule on Friday, Aug. 20. The Heritage School and Trinity Christian will both be in action that night, while Newnan, East Coweta and Northgate will open the next day, Saturday, Aug. 21 at Starr’s Mill High School in the Coweta-Fayette Classic.
Ladies flag football will start their regular season on Oct. 7.
The East Coweta Lady Indians softball team opens the year as the defending 7-A state champions, while the Trinity Christian football team will look to return to the state championship game where they finished runner-up last year.
