Stetson University Athletics

The College Sports Information Directors of America, in association with The Associated Press and the Fiesta Bowl Organization, has named the three recipients of the 2021 Mayo Clinic Comeback Players of the Year Award. They also named six players for honorable mention; these included Stetson University Hatter football player Avery Samuels.

Samuels, a sophomore offensive lineman for the Hatters, sat out the 2020- 21 season as seven members of his family died from COVID-19. Despite the family tragedy, Samuels returned to the Hatters during the summer of 2021 and worked his way back onto the field each week.

He played in eight of 10 games, starting in three. He was in for 341 snaps on offense and graded out at 95.5 percent for the season. Samuels is a psychology major at Stetson.

The Stetson men’s basketball team defeated the College of Charleston, 67-59, with Christiaan Jones scoring 23 points, along with nine rebounds and three steals. Chase Johnston added 14 points, and Josh Smith made 12 points with 10 rebounds.

The Hatters were stopped by the University of Miami, 82-72, with Johnston scoring 18 points. Rob Perry added 16 points with six rebounds and three assists, while Jones added 12 points with seven more rebounds.

The Hatters topped Piedmont, 97-53, with Perry scoring 21 points with four steals and five assists. Jones added 15 points with 10 rebounds. Johnston contributed 12 points, while Alex Crawford and Giancarlo Valdez each had 10 points.

The Lady Hatter basketball team defeated Virginia Commonwealth University, 64-58, with Mali Morgan-Elliott scoring 12 points, along with five rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot, while Tatiana Streun added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Kiya Turner scored 11 points.

The Lady Hats were stopped by Tennessee State, 60-56, with Streun getting 13 points, and Alyssa Hargrove scoring 13 with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jamiya Turner scored 12 while pulling down seven rebounds.

During the holiday period, Stetson had two athletes honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference: Alyssa Hargrove was named the Freshman of the Week, and Christiaan Jones was named the Player of the Week.

The Stetson athletic calendar has the men’s basketball team traveling to Jacksonville University for a game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, while the women’s team travels to the same school at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12.

On Saturday, Jan. 15, there will be a doubleheader basketball game in the Edmunds Center in DeLand, when the Hatter women host Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. and the Hatter men face the same school at 4 p.m.
