Along with Thanksgiving festivities, another November tradition is football.
The City of Yelm will celebrate the American combo of cooked birds and football with the inaugural City of Yelm Charity Turkey Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 18 at Longmore Park, with the first games beginning at 9 a.m.
The event will feature an adult flag football competition, and the tournament winner will select which charity the prize winnings will go to.
“This came about from a group that played at the mushball tournament,” Yelm Communications and Recreation Coordinator Line Roy said. “They loved the opportunity to donate to a charitable cause through that fun event. They wanted to keep the fun going with another tournament. So they worked with our Parks and Rec team to create the charity flag football tournament.”
People can organize teams and register them as one. This can include gathering friends, coworkers, neighbors and family.
“We have a great group of referees who are ready to keep this game fun and safe for everyone,” Roy said.
Roy said the city is not expecting Olympic-level athletes, and it is intended to be fun for everyone. It will be left up to the players if they’re up to the challenge of winning the Turkey Bowl.
“We know it’s close to the holidays, and people are busy, but we’d love to have a few teams competing and hope that they’ll invite their friends and families to watch and support,” Roy said.
