Beloved Homecoming tradition returns – The Arbiter

The annual Toilet Bowl took place on Monday, Sept. 27 during Boise State’s Homecoming. There were a lot of fun festivities lined up throughout the week, but this flag football tournament took the cake.

According to Boise State Student Life, the Toilet Bowl is one of the longest-running Boise State Homecoming traditions. It has been a Homecoming fixture for more than 60 years.

This intramural tournament has allowed students the opportunity to play on The Blue, which not many individuals can say they’ve done. It gives students the experience of what it is like to be a Boise State football player.

First-year student and accounting major Owen Quast competed as a member of the “Stingrays” during the Toilet Bowl.

“I want that free t-shirt, and I want to be up on the jumbotron during a football game,” Quast said. “That’s my motivation to play.”.

With a total of nine teams participating in this tournament, there was a lot of friendly competition, and each team seemingly bonded well together. According to the Toilet Bowl rules, each team requires a minimum of 3 females to allow more involvement.

Freshman pre-med student Jodi Ford was very enthusiastic about being able to play on The Blue. Throughout the tournament, Ford competed as a member of “You’re about to get REC’d.”

“The opportunity to play fell into my hands, I usually referee, but [the team] needed a girl and I was able to play,” Ford said. “You get to play on the Boise State Blue, which is so awesome.”

While many students are usually spectators in the stands of Albertsons Stadium, giving them this opportunity to play on the field is an experience unlike any other.

Freshman business student Dalton Cook from the “Young Royalty” team expressed that one of his main reasons for signing up for this tournament was to meet new people and compete with friends.

“It’s a lot of fun to hang out with friends and do something, instead of just sitting around not doing anything,” Cook said.

The Toilet Bowl has been around for more than 60 years and is a storied tradition when it comes to Homecoming week. This flag football tournament is a great avenue for students to get involved outside of school while meeting new people.
