I love being a part of an organization that lives their commitment to community engagement and inclusivity. Launching our new Flag Football program for ages 7-15 is a perfect example of that commitment.
This initiative was inspired by a passionate parent who expressed a desire for more athletic opportunities for her son. In response, our dedicated athletics team at the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA) promptly introduced a series of Jr. Special Olympics programs, starting with basketball and soccer. The enthusiastic reception to these programs led to an increased participation among young athletes and laid the foundation for our latest addition – flag football for ages 7-15.
This new program, born from yet another parent request, aims to teach fundamental flag football skills such as passing and flag pulling, while providing plenty of opportunities for scrimmaging. It’s a unique offering in our area, designed to foster both athletic skills and personal development.
As an officially sanctioned Special Olympics provider, WDSRA has a long history of offering diverse Special Olympics programs. Building on the success of our existing flag football program for athletes aged 16+, this new initiative seeks to create a supportive and positive environment where young athletes with special needs can thrive. “This program is not just about learning how to play football; it’s about building confidence, making new friends, and being part of a team. We are thrilled to offer this opportunity for young athletes,” said Macey Horbach, WDSRA Athletics Supervisor.
Another key aspect of our community inclusivity is the strong connections being formed with our coaching staff. Leading the program is Coach Dan Ryba, who brings extensive experience from his years playing football at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels. Since 2018, Dan has been coaching youth sports and has specifically coached youth tackle football since 2020 with the Naperville Saints. He has also recruited high school football players to further enrich the learning experience and provide mentorship to our young athletes.
With Coach Dan’s expertise and the involvement of enthusiastic high school mentors, excitement for the program continues to build. The WDSRA Flag Football program promises not only to develop football skills but also to create lasting memories and friendships, embodying the spirit of community and inclusivity at its core.
