Redbank Valley closed the regular season with its fourth straight win by handily outplaying the visiting Brookville Raiders in a 20-7 win last Friday night. The Bulldogs limited the Raiders to just 59 yards of offense in the first half and held them to a season-low 92 yards on the ground for the entire game. Still, the Bulldogs led just 14-7 at intermission. For Brookville, the regular season ended at 5-5. The Raiders will try to rebound this Saturday in the District 9 Class AA semifinals against Karns City. Zach Vroman was limited to 22 yards on six carries while Brodie Zacherl led the team with just 33 yards rushing on 13 carries. Raiders quarterback Steven Kennedy completed 12 of 18 passes, but for only 64 yards. Cameron Yard completed two option passes off gimmick plays for 38 yards. … The Brookville soccer teams put three players on this year’s Upper Allegheny Valley Soccer League’s Central Division All-Star team. The Raiders, who finished 12-7-1 overall and 5-4-1 in division play, which placed them in third place behind Brockway and Punxsutawney, put senior midfielders Brett Smith and Seth Connor, and junior sweeper Leland Mowery on the all-star team. Connor earned his third UAVSL honor while it was the second award for Smith. Mowery earned his first all-star honor. Smith was second on the team in scoring behind Wyatt Long with nine goals and a team-high 14 assists. Connor also had nine goals to go along with seven assists. Mowery helped the Raiders’ defense yield just 33 goals. For the Lady Raiders, who finished 10-8-2 and 6-4 in the division to tie Brockway for second place, got all-star nods for juniors Annie Amsler, Samantha Byerly and Ashley Wolfe. … For the Clarion-Limestone Lions, it was a turnover-marred game that finished their football season at 1-9. Ridgway capped off a playoff-less year at 6-4. … Perfectly speaking, the season ended with a dominant performance. Last Saturday in the ABC Youth Football League senior division championship game, the Brookville Lumberjacks rolled up more big numbers and finished off an undefeated season with a 40-8 rout of East Brady at Grove City High School. The 10-0 Lumberjacks won the program’s second title, both in the senior division, and first since 2007. The seniors also lost in the 2004 finals and the junior division team lost in last year’s championship game. John Frank wound up gaining 141 yards on eight carries while teammate Tyler Park, the 1,000-yard rusher that East Brady no doubt was focusing on after Park ran for 215 yards in the Lumberjacks’ semifinal playoff win, still managed to go over 100 yards by finishing with 109 yards on 13 carries. Park scored the team’s final touchdown on a 46-yard run.

Leading 7-0 after the first quarter, the Brookville Raiders weren’t able to keep that lead for long and dropped a 34-10 decision at Lock Haven in the District 9 Class 3A playoffs last Friday night. Zac Wynkoop scored on a 1-yard run two minutes into the game, but from there only a Nate Davis 28-yard field goal was all the Raiders could score. Lock Haven actually scored the game’s final 34 points as Trevor Reeder scored on two TD runs covering 14 and 80 yards. Reeder finished with 213 yards on only 15 carries. For the Raiders who finished the year 6-4, Chris Miller ran for 95 yards on 19 carries. … Eight Brookville Raiders were named the KSAC’s fall sports all-conference teams in volleyball and cross country. First-teamers in volleyball for the co-champion Lady Raiders were outside hitter April Geer and setter Mossy Nosik. Tara Keith was an honorable mention selection. Clarion-Limestone had three players on the volleyball team — Amy Mahle on the first team, Laura Smith on the second team and Wendy Walker as an honorable mention pick. On the KSAC cross country team, of course the Lady Raiders had several runners in MVP Mandy Richards, first-teamers Becca Boring, Alicia Gilson and Amy Standfest, and second-teamer Becky Hulse. Ben Whitling and Chuck Whitling were First Team picks for the boys’ cross country team. … The KSAC football all-conference team had two C-L Lions selected with Mike Bowersox as a first team running back and second team linebacker. Jared Beggs was a second team defensive back. … Swab’s and Mike’s Comet won titles in the Brookville Youth Flag Football League last weekend. Swab’s beat Means-Lauf, 38-8, while Mike’s beat Mason’s Beverage, 21-0.

The Brookville Raiders went on a rampage and defeated East Brady, 47-14, last Saturday afternoon at home to finish the season with an 8-1 record, tying them for first place in the Little Ten Conference with Clarion, which won its final game in a 7-2 win over Redbank Valley last Friday night. Bill Kutz scored three touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Raiders, who led 32-0 by halftime. Two of his scoring plays were in the first half on a 13-yard run and a 22-yard halfback option pass to Joe Barkley. Cary Van Aken blocked an East Brady punt that Tom Ferraro picked up and ran into the end zone and minutes later, Steve Crooks returned an interception 35 yards for another score. Steve White hit Jim Haney for a 40-yard TD and Kutz’s 40-yard scoring gallop finished off the scoring. The game actually finished with 1:57 left on the clock as a fight broke out on the field and game officials called the game at that point. Both Kutz (110) and Dave Richards (111) ran for over 100 yards. Following the game, a parade was held honoring the Raiders’ co-title season. Fire trucks were on hand from Brookville, Pinecreek, Sigel and Summerville.

The Brookville YMCA and Sykesville Senators will lift the lid off the 1946-47 J-C League basketball season at the YMCA tonight. The Senators will bring a comparatively young team here being composed of former Sykesville High stars. The locals’ starting lineup will be in doubt until the whistle is blown. Coach Karl Kroh’s aggregation will strive desparately to clinch the opener. Next Monday, the top team in the area will travel here to play the Y team as the DuBois Litts will be here. The Litts won last year’s YMCA tournament. … Jefferson County’s first fatal hunting accident this year resulted in the death of a 21-year-old navy veteran last Monday afternoon when Harry Dale Orcutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Orcutt of Corsica was instantly killed when he received the full charge from a shotgun in the stomach while hunting squirrels on his father’s farm.

Sigel High School opens its basketball season tomorrow night with Snyder Township. The community building is almost completed and it’s hoped that it will be ready for use. The building is arranged to seat 300, all of whom may see the game. It will be amply heated and in every way made comfortable. … The upcoming league schedule for Brookville begins on Jan. 6 at Reynoldsville. The league roster this year also has New Bethlehem, Punxsutawney, DuBois and Clearfield. … Our genial friend and fellow townsman, Bert English, is being mentioned for the position of manager of the baseball team at Evansville, Ind., in the Three-I League for next year. The Sunday Courier reported that, “English was with an independent team at Brookville, Pa., during the past year, the team winning 62 and losing 30 games during the season, playing some of the best in the independent clubs in the East.”
