The Flagler County 4-H Program is searching for adult volunteers looking to make an impact on local youth. 4-H is America’s largest youth development organization that offers hands-on learning experiences in areas such as health, science, agriculture and civic engagement.
Here in Flagler County, we have nearly 20 screened volunteers serving as community club leaders across seven clubs. These leaders build positive youth-adult partnership where adults work with young people to plan, learn, work and lead together. Our current volunteers put in countless hours on livestock, equine, archery, community service and other projects. With our program consistently growing, our county would greatly benefit from new 4-H clubs.
A 4-H Club is an organized group of youth (ages 8-18), guided by adult leaders. Clubs are planned educational programs that are carried out throughout all (or most) of the year. Clubs can be designed around one specific project area or clubs can be more general interest, offering a variety of project opportunities for club members. 4-H project areas can include animal sciences, beekeeping, environmental sciences, forestry, gardening, robotics, sewing, woodworking and hundreds of other opportunities for hands-on learning. 4-H clubs can be structured as a community club, in-school club or after-school club.
To start a 4-H club, you will need two adult volunteers willing to serve as club leaders. These volunteers will require full background screening and appropriate trainings, all facilitated by your county 4-H office. Leaders are encouraged to communicate with local families to recruit potential members, especially if the club has is focused on specific special interest projects. If you are interested in taking on this very worthy pursuit of starting your own 4-H club, contact Bailea Gnann, your local 4-H agent, at 386-437-7464 or bgnann@ufl.edu.
